Working with Power BI KPIs

KPIs or Key Performance Indicators in Power BI are an important part of a document when we analyze the information. This displays the important stats of the information. It plays an important part as visual cues that indicate growth by analyzing ideals and measurable goals.

The intention of using KPI is to help the users to evaluate the current value and status of a metric a defined target. That means it analyzes the exact efficiency with the target value. From the KPI visuals, you can determine whether the objectives we established are accomplished or not. For instance, we can evaluate our real profit against a focus on income in a year.

What KPI results?

High-level KPI gives the analysis of the overall performance of a business or organization in a given period, while low-level KPI focuses on each department in a business such as an employee, sales, advertising, etc.

Needs for KPI visualization

KPI visual has 3 field wells

Ø Indicator(actual or base value)

Ø Trend Axis

Ø Target goals(one or two)

Only the first two fields are required. If using only the first two fields, the resultant KPI appears like the following.

The visual displays the indicator value(Total Actual Amount) corresponds to the last point on-trend axis(Calendar Year Label).

If adding one or two target values to Target goals well, the KPI looks like the following:

Now, in this visual, below the indicator, it is showing the target value for the last trend axis point as well as the percentage difference between indicator and target goal.

When you use the target goal field, it will have conditional formatting. According to the condition, the indicator itself and background will be colored and an icon will be displayed on the right side of the indication. If the sign can be below the focus on worth, it will be colored red along with history and an exclamation sign will be shown as in the above visual. If the indicator can be an above focus on the goal, the color will be green and a tick mark will be displayed to the right of the indicator.

If you use two target goals, and the indicator happens to be between these target goals, the color will be yellow and a filled point will be displayed next to the indicator.

For specific KPI, the low indicator is good. In that case, you can change the conditional formatting behavior in the Direction drop-down list in the Color Coding section of the Format pane. Then the formatting will be reversed according to the situation. That is, the default behavior will be “High can be good.” If you select “Low is good” from the fall down, the background will be green when the indicator can be below the target goal and the mark will be displayed instead of the exclamation sign.  You can furthermore change the colors and turn on and off the objective value, distance, and trend axis in the formatting pane.
